Exhibition “Roundabout ways”. Pushchino, 2021

17 November 2021

The author walks along quiet, discreet, roundabout paths, noticing the essence of things through which time flows. Such roads lead to the smooth surface of the river, and to dilapidated houses, and to temples soaring into the sky, and into vegetable gardens. A photographic essay about time and meaning is presented by Konstantin Chemeris.

“This is not just one shooting, but a selection of several episodes, they are united under the title “Roundabout ways”. The work traces the theme of time, which is quite important to me. I like to show those spaces through which time has been moving for a long time, and this can be recorded,” said Konstantin Chemeris.

“Roundabout ways” are works from several series created in different years in different locations. At the exhibition they are divided into six story blocks.

“The author once again chose a presentation style where photographs are presented in a variety of formats: each block contains leading works and those that bring the viewer closer and further away from the main ones,” said Evgenia Komarova, head of the exhibition activities department of the Vertical Central Cultural Center.

“Color is more superficial, rather emotional,” says Konstantin Chemeris. – “I prefer to look into the essence of things. My exhibition is calmer, closer to reflection than to emotion”.

“The works of Konstantin Chemeris are distinguished by a restrained emotional range,” confirms Evgenia Komarova, - “This is a very graphic monochrome, it is somewhat similar to graphics, somewhat like a pencil. The photographs are characterized by a large share of contemplative sadness”.

The opening of the exhibition took place on November 17. The photographer and the staff of the Vertical Center for Cultural Development have a long-standing friendship of co-creation. But it so happened that “Roundabout ways” became the first personal exhibition of Konstantin Chemeris within the walls of the new building of the Central Cultural Center.

“I would like to wish you further creative success,” Victoria Sergeeva, director of the Vertical Central Cultural Center, addressed the author of the exhibition, - “so that the book comes out, there are scholarships, health does not fail, friends are always there”.

The exhibition will run until December 16, so everyone has the opportunity to walk along the circuitous paths of the city outskirts, wander into the labyrinths of their own thoughts, and feel the flow of time that leaves traces without stopping its movement.

-----------------------
“Roundabout ways” are visual essays about the unimportant, secondary, non-obvious, from which, perhaps, our present is built. Every photograph here is a quiet reflection on life. In the collection it is difficult to find recognizable architectural ensembles that have become the “calling cards” of the cities in which the photographs were taken. On the contrary, these are quiet corners behind garages that are not visible from the central streets and excursion routes, city outskirts and old courtyards, far from the “Potemkin villages”. It is here that the traces of time appear most clearly, continuously and uncontrollably flowing through space.

This exhibition includes key works from several series created between 2011 and 2021 in a classic monochrome palette.
